Today, the Senate finally confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to a lifetime appointment on the U.S. Supreme Court! I want to personally thank you for leading us to this historic moment. We have achieved this victory because you cared enough to give your time, money, and passion to a process that was often cheap, petty, and undignified. You knew she was worth it, and now generations of Americans will know the name Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. 

In the Washington, D.C. area? We have two ways you can celebrate with us:

Just as I am grateful to you, I am grateful to have been able to support a nominee like Ketanji Brown Jackson. Judge Jackson’s obvious credentials, skills, and charm were on display throughout the process. Her extraordinary dignity and grace outshone the petty, politicized smear campaigns designed to stop her. In fact, polls show that she emerges as one of the most popular justices in recent history. With good reason: Judge Jackson is the best our justice system has to offer and is uniquely capable of restoring some measure of trust in our nation’s highest court.

So thank you again for standing with us to make history today. Justice Jackson’s confirmation is only the beginning of a brighter future. Alliance for Justice’s push to fill every federal judicial vacancy - this year – will continue with new energy and momentum. We will aim to see judges like Justice Jackson—judges who respect the rights of all—nominated and confirmed throughout the rest of the year. I hope you will stick with us. The Good News: Common Sense over Extremism 

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Richard Durbin led this past Monday’s markup, and Democratic members were poised and ready. They called out cherry-picked data and incendiary mistruths about Justice Jackson’s record. They also entered new letters of support to validate the judge's sentencing practices. 

The opposition found themselves in a pickle. They heralded her wits, character, and work ethic, while complaining that her record showed she did not have the right “judicial philosophy” — i.e., she would not rubber stamp the conservative agenda. The contradictions so overwhelmed common sense that Senator Lisa Murkowski was forced to acknowledge the sheer extremism of this political opposition. She explained that it is obvious Judge Jackson is qualified for the role and independent and unbiased in her rulings.  

Murkowski said her vote was a “rejection of the corrosive politicization of the review process for Supreme Court nominees . . . [that] is growing worse and more detached from reality by the year.”

Pay Attention: Lower Courts Matter 

Justice Jackson is not the only judge confirmed of late. On March 31st, the Senate confirmed two nominees to lifetime judgeships: Georgette Castner (District of New Jersey) and Sarah Geraghty (Northern District of Georgia). This brings the number of Biden lower court judges confirmed to 58!  

Plus, just this week, the SJC advanced five more judicial nominations to the full Senate: 

• Stephanie Davis (6th Cir., Mich.) 
• Arianna Freeman (3d Cir., Penn.) 
• Robert Huie (S.D. Cal.) 
• Evelyn Padin (D. N.J.)
• Jennifer Rearden (S.D.N.Y.) 
  
  

Here are two nominations that Alliance for Justice has tracked closely from the start:  

• Sarah Geraghty, confirmed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, has spent the last two decades at the Southern Center for Human Rights working to improve fairness within the criminal legal system. Upon her confirmation, she became the 19th Biden-appointed judge with experience as a public defender.  
  
  
• Stephanie Davis, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, brings extensive experience as both a practicing attorney and jurist. She has served as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan since 2019 and was a Magistrate Judge for three years before that. Judge Davis now awaits a final confirmation vote in the Senate.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is just the beginning of the people’s push to ensure our courts are run by fair-minded, impartial judges who look like the America they serve.
