Learn what Kendra's Law does — and what it doesn't do

Did you see Policy Director Brian Stettin's joint op-ed in the (Albany) Times Union this week with New York State Assemblywoman Taylor Darling? In it, they set the record straight about Kendra Law’s, New York’s version of assisted outpatient treatment.

“Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal to expand Kendra’s Law — for those with severe mental illness who have repeatedly disengaged from prescribed treatment — has faced an exasperating barrage of misinformation and distortions,” Stettin and Taylor write. Far from being a punitive “system failure,” they continue, “Kendra’s Law has proven itself over 23 years as our best tool in helping the most vulnerable mentally ill New Yorkers escape the endless shuttle between hospitals, incarceration and the streets.”
