John,
Today, I am taking action to protect abortion rights in Michigan.
The Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade this year, and I’m worried, like many doctors, advocates, and Michiganders, that the clock on reproductive rights will be turned back 50 years.
Right now, if Roe is overturned, Michiganders could be forced to live under a nearly century-old, dangerous abortion ban still on the books in Michigan. The statute, one of the country’s most restrictive, says that providers who perform abortions are guilty of a felony.
That’s why I am filing a lawsuit with the Michigan Supreme Court to ensure Michigan’s arcane abortion ban never goes into effect, even if the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
We have to protect reproductive rights and the rights of every Michigander. The threat of a future in which abortion is banned in Michigan and health care providers are criminalized is very real. And this lawsuit is the last line of defense standing in the way of attempts to restrict access to abortion in Michigan.
