WOMEN WORKERS' VITAL ROLE IN CLIMATE CHANGE SOLUTIONS

At migration and UN events, the Solidarity Center, unions and civil society partners highlighted the impact of climate change on women workers, emphasized the role of worker organizations in driving gender-focused solutions and recognized that climate action requires coalition-building across social movements.

MEXICAN AUTO WORKERS WIN LANDMARK VICTORY

Six thousand workers formed an independent union at a GM auto plant in Silao, Mexico, voting out a union that did not operate in their interest. Read more about the win or listen to our podcast episode with one of the union leaders who describes the lead-up to the milestone victory.

CAMBODIAN CASINO WORKERS ASSAULTED AND ARRESTED WHILE LAWFULLY PROTESTING

UPDATE: Thousands of workers went on strike against their employer, NagaWorld, which has laid off hundreds. Mass arrests followed, including of union leaders. Read more about the workers mobilizing and worldwide support for their fight for worker rights.

NIGERIA LAUNCHES PLATFORM WORKER RIGHTS CAMPAIGN

With Solidarity Center support, unions and worker rights organizations launched a campaign for formal recognition of and adequate representation for platform workers in Nigeria. Post-pandemic, many young people are now employed in the gig economy or other informal jobs that lack basic social protections. Read more.

ACTIVISTS LIFT UZBEK COTTON GLOBAL BOYCOTT

The Cotton Campaign—a coalition of human rights, labor, responsible investor and business organizations, including the Solidarity Center—ended its call for a global boycott of Uzbek cotton as no systematic state-imposed forced labor was found in 2021. The coalition will continue to monitor progress.

ILAW JOURNAL: ADVANCING THE RIGHTS OF INFORMAL WORKERS (February 2022)

Workers in the informal economy, with assistance from legal advocates, have won protections and respect for their rights at work through a variety of legal strategies, both within and outside of labor law. In the latest issue of the Global Labour Rights Reporter, case studies highlight the ways workers and their advocates have been fighting to ensure protections on the job in the informal sector.
