Senate Finance Committee Budget Testimony

Tomorrow and Friday you have the opportunity to call in and ask the Senate Finance Committee to invest in housing solutions for Alaska. This is the time to make your voice heard and to share your experience as service providers and Alaskans!
Alaska has a serious housing shortage, and legislators need to hear about the issue firsthand from people who are affected by it. If you believe that housing is the solution to homelessness and that there aren’t enough units to meet the needs of our community, consider providing testimony.

Guidance for Recruiting, Hiring, and Retaining People with Lived Experience and Expertise of Homelessness
Forming partnerships with individuals with lived expertise is urgent and necessary in the fight to end homelessness. As communities grapple with how to create more equitable systems, the increasing awareness of the importance of engaging individuals with lived expertise ([link removed]) of homelessness presents new possibilities for implementing equitable change. Hiring people with lived expertise is one of several ([link removed]) staffing options for COVID-19 Emergency Solutions Grants ([link removed]) (ESG-CV) administration
([link removed]) . Whatever the position within the organization, the benefits to the workplace and for the person with lived experience and expertise is a win-win!
Before the hiring process begins, there are some key requirements for the recruitment, hiring, effective onboarding, and retention of people who have experienced homelessness: inclusive ([link removed]) and equitable hiring practices; staff orientation ([link removed]) to racial equity ([link removed]) and trauma; a supportive workplace that creates a sense of belonging; and a workplace environment that values the awareness, knowledge, and wisdom that comes from experiencing homelessness. To end homelessness, it is important to develop authentic partnerships with people who have experienced it. Hiring people who are experts by experience ([link removed]) allows for the exploration of new
opportunities for both the organization and the individual.
