I’m thrilled to share that yesterday the D.C. Council made history by introducing and unanimously passing the “Sense of the Council Condemning Antisemitism Resolution of 2022”—the Council’s first ever legislative approach to condemning antisemitism in the district.
This critical legislation make the important statement that antisemitism, as well as hate and bigotry of all forms, have no place in our society. Thanks to leaders like Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, the entire Council has sent a message to the Jewish community that hate and antisemitism will not be tolerated in the District.
At a time when antisemitism remains at historically high levels, as shown by our 2020 Audit, it is crucial that we all use our voices to speak out against the rising tide of antisemitism. Here in the D.C. region, we’re proud to be collaborating with our partners at American Jewish Committee (AJC) D.C. and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington to educate our community of the dangers of antisemitism and learn how to interrupt it.
Last December, when third graders were allegedly instructed to reenact the Holocaust at Watkins Elementary School, we came together to meet with Chancellor Ferebee and staff and provided resources for healing and support. We’re pleased to share that the work continues at DCPS. Last week we met together again and received assurances from the Chancellor that DCPS is committed
to continue to partner with our organizations to ensure educators have the tools and resources they need to understand the nuances of antisemitism and interrupt antisemitism when it manifests in educational spaces.
