On April 1, Starbucks workers at one of the company's flagship stores won
a momentous union election – becoming the first unionized Starbucks in New
York City and the tenth election won by Starbucks Workers United.

From the first unionized Starbucks in Buffalo, NY this past December, to
the John Deere strike in October when over 10,000 workers stopped work for
five weeks to demand a better union contract – there's no doubt that we're
seeing a rise in worker organizing across the country to demand better pay
and better working conditions.

If you're inspired by these efforts and wondering how to organize at your
own workplace, we're here to help!

Last week, Alexandria met with workers at the Astoria Starbucks – which
was the first location in Queens to join the unionization effort – to hear
about their efforts and amplify their work. Having worked in the food and
beverage industry for years, Alexandria knows firsthand that it's one of
the most exploited industries – yet so few of these workplaces are
unionized.

More than 145 Starbucks locations have filed for union elections
nationally. However, this has been no easy feat. Union busting is a
sophisticated and lucrative business. From the start, Starbucks baristas –
whose average age is just 24 – have felt a great deal of pressure from the
top, as higher-ups have pushed workers to doubt themselves and their
peers.

your order name at Starbucks to 'Union Strong'. ✊

The act of organizing means coming together to address issues important to
you as a worker — from sexual harassment to management, workplace
bullying, wages, and benefits. It's not about a single person or single
store, it's about building community to improve the lives of everyone.

Knowing when and how to organize your co-workers can be a daunting task.
