John,
You’ve heard us say this before: congressional stock trading must stop.
Support for this commonsense measure has really hit its stride in recent weeks: From news of outrageous trading by lawmakers, to an exciting rise in bipartisan support for ending this practice on Capitol Hill, banning members of Congress and their families from buying and selling stocks while in office is closer than ever to becoming reality.
In fact, the Committee on House Administration is holding a hearing tomorrow to debate this very issue. And we want to make sure that they — and the rest of Congress — know how much the American people want this practice to end. Currently, two pieces of legislation are being negotiated to address this issue: the TRUST in Congress Act (H.R. 336) and the Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act (S. 3494).
It’s time to get this crucial reform over the finish line. Can you help us?
Call your representatives TODAY at (202) 224-3121 and let them know that you support putting an end to congressional stocking trading — and that they should too!
Tell your representatives:
The American people should have confidence that their elected representatives are working for them and not their personal stock portfolios. It’s encouraging to see growing bipartisan support in Congress for stopping congressional stock trading, and now it’s time for action. Congress should act now to pass legislation currently being negotiated that would ban members and their families from buying and selling individual stocks while in office.
Onward,
Ethan Rome Chief of Policy and Program, Issue One
