Friend, GLAAD recently released some disturbing revelations about the use of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in the 2019 elections, and I wanted to make sure you heard about it. 

Here’s the problem: We’re seeing a nationwide, top-down strategy targeting transgender Americans. We saw ads on television and online all over America, including one in Louisiana where a Republican gubernatorial candidate claimed, “As a doctor, I can assure you, there are only two genders.”

Here’s what could happen next: Remember in 2004 when former President George Bush's reelection campaign used anti-LGBTQ rhetoric to divide the country and turn out voters? We’re seeing signs that this could happen again in 2020, with Donald Trump, Jr. repeating this rhetoric this month. If successful, this strategy could halt progress for LGBTQ acceptance in the United States.

Here’s the good news: In many places, this strategy isn’t working. Openly transgender legislator Danica Roem won re-election in Virginia, and pro-LGBTQ candidate Andy Beshear and John Bel Edwards won their gubernatorial races in Kentucky and Louisiana. 

But friend, we cannot take these recent wins for granted. We must be realistic about the dangers of this anti-LGBTQ strategy and how it could affect the 2020 election. Will you donate $25 to GLAAD right now to help us fight back against bigoted, misleading ads like the ones we saw in 2019?
