Governor Doug Ducey visited the Arizona Humane Society ([link removed]) yesterday on Arizona Gives Day to learn about the programs that benefit both pets and people.

The Governor also announced $1.27 million ([link removed]) will be going toward the nonprofit to support initiatives that provide foster care services for pets whose owners are facing instability or emergency situations, set up temporary shelters for pets during natural disasters, and engage youth in need with activities that help them grow.

The Arizona Humane Society is receiving a grant under the American Rescue Plan for vet assistance, temporary foster care programs and other services. Within that grant is $700,000 for pet owners experiencing housing instability or financial crisis. $200,000 will be for animal-based educational programs helping "at-risk and special needs youth." Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey was at the event stressing the importance of nonprofits.

The Arizona Humane Society will receive $1.27 million from the state to protect pets when their owners face instability and during natural disasters.

Gov. Doug Ducey announced the funding during a tour of the nonprofit organization’s Sunnyslope Campus near 7th and Dunlap avenues in Phoenix on Tuesday.

“The Arizona Humane Society has helped get many animals into safe, loving homes,” Ducey said in a press release ([link removed]) .

Gov. Doug Ducey announced on Tuesday his administration is giving the Arizona Humane Society $1.27 million. The news came as he toured the animal shelter’s Sunnyslope campus in Phoenix.

“The Arizona Humane Society has helped get many animals into safe, loving homes,” said Gov. Ducey. “Last year when many Arizona communities and families experienced devastation from wildfires and flooding, the Humane Society acted quickly to protect pets and provide shelter. I’m grateful to the team at the Humane Society for their hard work and dedication to supporting our communities and protecting pets.”

During his tour, Ducey saw first-hand an AHS worker helping out a dog whose leg was broken. “Looks like he’s in good hands,” said Ducey.

The funding was announced on Tuesday, April 5 during Governor Ducey’s tour of the Arizona Humane Society’s Sunnyslope campus in Phoenix. The visit was just before the official start of Arizona Gives Day ([link removed]) , which begins at noon on Tuesday, April 5 and lasts 24 hours.

A breakdown of the Arizona Humane Society funding is below:
* $700,000 for Project Away From Home to connect pet owners experiencing housing instability, financial crises, domestic violence situations or emergency hospitalization with temporary foster care for their pet until they get back on their feet.
* $370,000 for Disaster Response & Emergency Rescue to fund a mobile pop-up shelter and kenneling system to take to natural disasters across Arizona and an additional rescue truck that features a special animal holding and air-conditioned box.
* $200,000 for educational programming to reach 2,000 at-risk and special needs youth with hands-on activities that allow them to spend time with animals, learn about future career opportunities and spend time with peers.
