August 31 is less than four months away. Take action now to fix our broken student loan system.

Dear MoveOn member,

Great news! The Biden White House has announced an extension to the student debt payment pause—it is now set to last until August 31.1

This is further proof that MoveOn member mobilization works. Over the last several months, hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members have taken action, along with progressive allies such as the Debt Collective and the Student Debt Crisis Center. Together, we've demanded that the Biden administration provide immediate and long-term relief to the millions of people buried under student debt.

And while it's important to celebrate this moment, it's also important to acknowledge that August 31 is less than four months away—and that's not nearly enough time to fix our broken student loan system. It's clear that student borrowers desperately need permanent debt relief from this administration, so we can't let up the pressure.

If you're a federal student loan borrower with debt, please share your story. You can call 833-933-0208 and leave a brief message with your first name, your state, and, if you're willing to share, how much student loan debt you owe. You can share how you've benefited from two years of freedom from federal loan payments, and what debt cancellation would mean to you.

MoveOn may share your message with key stakeholders in Congress and the Biden administration, so that they know how their actions can impact millions. Your message may also be shared with fellow members online, to inspire more people to join the movement for student debt relief.

You can also take action right now by clicking here to join nearly 80,000 MoveOn members who have signed a petition demanding that President Biden continue to pause student loan payments! (And if you're one of the 80,000 folks who have already signed, thank you! Please use this opportunity to share this petition with friends and family!)

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition: President Biden must not resume student loan payment collection!

Dear MoveOn member,

The student debt payment pause, which has meant so much to millions of Americans, is about to expire! It's provided a critical lifeline for millions of Americans over the last two years—but it’s set to end in nearly one month, on May 1.1

For millions of student borrowers across the country, it’s been over two years since their last federal student loan payment. Since March of 2020, a federal student loan payment pause has been in effect in order to support borrowers through a series of unprecedented economic crises fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s clear that ending the student loan payment pause and restarting payments would be a disastrous decision. Sign this petition urging the Biden administration not to restart loan payments on May 1!

Tell the Biden Administration: Don't restart student loan payments!

Millions of student loan borrowers are trapped in exploitative loan arrangements, with sky-high interest rates and little hope of ever paying off their debt—and they can’t afford to restart payments anytime in the foreseeable future.2 While the for-profit lenders are getting richer, millions of Americans reach middle age locked into perpetual debt. It would be cruel (and, not to mention, politically reckless) to resume payments, especially as we continue to grapple with the ongoing inflation crisis on a daily basis.

Borrowers can’t afford to resume student loan payments. Demand that the Biden administration extend the payment pause indefinitely!

Continuing the pause on federal student loan payments is an important investment in Americans' financial lives. Not only has it provided critical relief for millions of people, it’s given them a degree of financial freedom to pay rent or purchase homes, afford health care or medicine, start small businesses, and support their families.

Call on the Biden administration to extend the student loan payment pause indefinitely!

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support our work? Right-wing groups are spending tens of millions of dollars on TV ads to smear critical progressive legislation. Meanwhile, donations to progressive groups like MoveOn are plummeting now that a Democrat is in the White House, meaning we don’t have the resources to fight back. That's a huge problem, and that's why we urgently need your support.

Will you chip in to fight right-wing lies and pass urgent legislation to confront the multiple crises our country faces?
