John -
As the national co-chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) it is especially important to me to lead with my Democratic values. That is why I'm so pleased our organization announced that beginning in 2020 all candidates who seek the support of DAGA will need to agree to publicly commit to supporting reproductive rights, including access to abortion. We will only endorse those who make this pledge.
As we head into the 2020 election cycle, we're witnessing harmful restrictions on reproductive freedom sweeping the nation, rolling back decades of progress. We recently saw at least six states pass unconstitutional laws banning abortion (sometimes even before a person is likely to know she is pregnant) in order to get positioned to urge the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade--which legalized abortion nearly 50 years ago!
With this week's DAGA announcement, Democratic AGs are sending a message: Reproductive freedom, and with it, our health and safety, are not negotiable.
A person's decision about when or whether to give birth to a child is deeply personal. No one should be allowed to take that choice away. Access to care is already far too difficult. Let's make it easier--not harder! Even worse, these restrictions and bans disproportionately affect low-income communities, communities of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
My promise to you, Callie, is that I will never let up in this fight. I continue to lead 21 states, alongside Planned Parenthood and the American Medical Association, in the court battle against the very bad Title X Gag Rule. it has already wreaked havoc on family planning clinics throughout the country. In the face of relentless assaults on our reproductive freedom, I will continue to take whatever legal action is necessary to protect the right to maintain our self-determination, health, and dignity.
And we need more Democratic AGs who are similarly committed, in addition to my 26 Democratic AG colleagues who are currently in office. There is no group of elected officials better positioned to lead the fight for our reproductive rights than state Attorneys General. That is why electing Democratic AGs who are willing to pledge their commitment to protecting reproductive freedom, especially for our most vulnerable communities, has never been more important.
Let this be a new day for Democratic leadership. Today, tomorrow, and at the ballot box--it's "all hands on deck" in support of reproductive freedom. Non-negotiable!
With warm regards and appreciation,
Ellen
