Although we have never wanted to quote Jimmy Carter since his debacle of a presidency 40 years ago, his description of a malaise in America might have foreshadowed a similar national feeling now in 2022. We are dramatically divided today, and there is a general sense of disbelief about things we never thought would be trumpeted as positive for our society. Then the government's reactions to COVID pushed us farther apart with lockdowns and draconian rules and regulations. All is not lost, however, as Tim Goeglein explains. The church has always been a comfort in times of great trouble, and we need to get back into the pews. It will be critical for our communities and our nation to rebound. Reprinted with permission. Several years ago Dan Edmunds, a diplomate of the American Psychotherapy Association, said, “One of the most destructive problems is the breakdown of community, and it is this breakdown that has often led to the breakdown of persons. Though we may put many around us, we are alone.”

For decades, a major source of community for many Americans was their local house of worship. While those attending may have had varying degrees of commitment to living out their faith, they would gather to enjoy fellowship with each other as they passed through the stages of life — from childhood all the way to life’s eventual end.
