This morning, our Founder Shaun King and our Organizing Director Chris Lazare, had the chance to talk with our good friend Tim Emry on Instagram Live about his race to be the next DA for Mecklenburg County in North Carolina. That means Charlotte.
He has been a criminal defense attorney in Charlotte for over 20 years.
He started out his career as a public defender.
He has seen the inequities that have been spawned by a so-called justice system that is built to target and lock up Black and brown people.
Under the current DA in Mecklenburg County, Black people have been 800% MORE LIKELY to be locked up than a white person.
This current DA has chosen NOT to prosecute police officers when they have shot and killed people.
Right now, Tim is on a team of lawyers who is suing the Charlotte Police Department for their violent actions against protestors in the wake of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.
Tim is fighting to reduce mass incarceration, hold the police accountable, promote life-saving racial and restorative justice policies, and has vowed to NEVER seek the death penalty.
Tim is the EXACT kind of candidate we need as DA in communities all over this country. He knows that our communities are safe when they have the investment and long-term support for community services, not more money for the police and mass incarceration.
