Tuesday, April 5, 2022 | The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs
Dear John,

Today President Joe Biden delivered remarks on the Affordable Care Act and the Family Glitch rule. For background, read this 2014 explainer from Tricia Brooks. In the proposed rule, the White House cites a 2021 Forefront article from Katie Keith on fixing the family glitch.

Revisit the March 2020 issue of Health Affairs for a comprehensive review of what the law has accomplished and what remains to be done as the ACA turns 12, and join us on April 14 for a discussion about its future.
Child Vaccination Laws
Every state and the District of Columbia require children from birth through age five to be vaccinated against certain communicable diseases in order to receive child care.

In the April 2022 issue of Health Affairs, Alexandra Bhatti and coauthors systematically examine vaccination laws across all fifty states and Washington, D.C.

They find variability in the stringency and mechanics of these policies, including that 90 percent of jurisdictions permit provisional enrollment for children not up to date with required vaccines and 90 percent allow for nonmedical exemptions.

This study provides a critical benchmark for child care vaccination laws in the US and a baseline for researchers to measure the impact of child care vaccination laws on vaccination coverage rates at a more granular level and over time.

Elsewhere At Health Affairs
Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Liza Vertinsky argues that biomedical public-private partnerships need to be designed and governed in ways that better align private incentives with the public interest.

Katie Keith discusses the new analyses and guidance for states and insurers that the Centers for Medicare And Medicaid Services issued in late March, including pass-through funding amounts for states with an approved Section 1332 waiver, form filing instructions, and key dates for 2022.

Rachel Berthiaume and coauthors discuss how health care providers are transforming clinical approaches into community-centered public health outcomes by applying equity-centered leadership skills.

Listen to Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil interview Kathryn Phillips from the University of California San Francisco on how we gain the advantages of better cancer screening technologies as they emerge.
