Dear reader,
Greetings from San Diego, where I’m attending the education conference ASU+GSV and listening to conversations about the future of work, alternative training programs and credentials, and the need for multiple pathways to good jobs and degrees. These are also among the topics of enormous concern to us here at The Hechinger Report. If no one is talking about the many challenges facing U.S. education and our workforce, we’ll never get to the solutions.
Our job as journalists, though, includes uncovering problems, and this week we bring you a major investigation of programs to train truck drivers, run by trucking companies. Like many businesses, trucking companies face a shortage of workers, and are scrambling to fill the gap. But in an industry plagued with class-action lawsuits about working conditions and wages, drivers often end up paying a price. Take some time with this investigation, which was co-published with our partner The New York Times.
As always, we love to hear from our readers, and appreciate when you remind others to sign up for our newsletters.
