In this edition of the newsletter, we continue our focus on 20th Century U.S. foreign policy and the Cold War by sharing this playlist. It contains essays, videos, lessons, and activities covering the end of the Korean War, the McCarthy Era, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Using these activities, you can explore questions with your students like, "Why did some Americans violate the constitutional rights of others during the Cold War?" and, "What shifts in U.S. foreign policy came about as a result of the Cuban missile crisis?"

What does Federalist 62 tell us about the Senate? In this episode of BRI’s Primary Source Close Reads, Kirk gives an overview of Federalist 62 and the construction of the Senate. What role should the Senate serve according to Federalist 62? How does Publius argue the Senate will fulfill its role?

Encourage Students to Join the Debate

Throughout our nation’s history, immigrants have come to the US seeking economic opportunities and freedom. While the U.S. has accepted large numbers of immigrants for centuries, it has also imposed various restrictions on immigrants.

What do your students think? Should the United States loosen its immigration laws? Student (and teacher!) prizes will be awarded for the best defense of each side of the debate. Each student winner will also be entered for a chance to win a grand prize of a $1,000 cash scholarship. Students have until 4/14/22 to join the debate!

It's the first week in April and that can only mean one thing here at the Bill of Rights Institute: the deadline for the We the Students essay contest is less than two weeks away! Your students have until April 15 at 11:59 p.m. PT to submit their essays on this year's topic: How does an understanding of natural rights and respect build a free society? Sixteen students will win a total of $20,000 in scholarship prizes including a $7,500 grand prize.

AP testing season is right around the corner and we also want to remind you that our live AP U.S. History Preparedness webinars with host, veteran APUSH teacher Daniel Jocz, will begin on April 24. Students can sign up on our website to join live or watch the recordings later on our YouTube channel.

Finally, if you have students looking for summer opportunities, please encourage them to apply for our Constitutional Academy program which is taking place July 10-15 in Washington, DC. Program applications will be accepted through June 1st.
