Centre for Mental Health news

November 2019

Hello from Sarah!

Dear Friends,

We are hurtling through another busy year and it will soon be Christmas, but before then we at the Centre remain focused on making sense of the social and political environment. You’ll see that we have published our election manifesto briefing calling for a cross-government approach to mental health, education reform and reform of the welfare system. In partnership with the Mental Health Policy Group, we also published our shared manifesto

At the Centre we ultimately want equality, a society that gives people the help they need when they need it, public services that are resourced properly, and a recognition that the work around parity of esteem has a long way to go. These are turbulent times, and now more than ever we need to come together on this common cause. It’s vital that we hold close the values that put people at the heart of decision making, debate with respect and remember that most people are doing their absolute best.

We’ll be launching more research over the coming weeks including work on trauma-informed care and public service economics – do look out for these. And we’re always keen to hear from you – let us know what you thought of our manifesto.

Best wishes,

Sarah
2019 General Election
Mental health priorities for the new Government

We’re at a critical moment in the nation’s mental health. The topic has never been more prominent in public debate, and we’ve seen some progress made.

Yet in the midst of this, too many people still aren’t getting the support they need. Poverty and inequality still make people more likely to experience a mental health problem.

Ahead of this December’s General Election, we’re calling on all political parties and the future Government to take concerted action to improve the nation’s mental health and the lives of people with mental health difficulties.

Making the grade
How education shapes young people's mental health

Good mental health is vital in allowing young people to learn, build resilience and develop the skills they need to grow into well-rounded, healthy adults. But how can we ensure that schools, colleges and universities are nurturing environments which promote their wellbeing?

This report calls on the Government to ensure funding for schools, colleges and universities enables them to create a healthy, nurturing environment, especially for children and young people facing the biggest disadvantages and adversities.

We're working with London South Bank University to evaluate the impact of mental health first aid interventions. The EMPOWER research project, commissioned by Mental Health First Aid England will explore the benefits to employees of mental health first aid in the workplace.

We're seeking companies to take part int he study and, in doing so, receive free Mental Health First Aid training.
