Friend — California is far behind where it needs to be on climate action.

Even though Democrats have held a supermajority since 2018, the State Legislature has failed to take meaningful climate action at the rate and scale that is needed for the crisis during that time. The state’s D grade in our 2021 Environmental Scorecard reflects that

California is not on track to meet its current goals to lower emissions and build out clean energy sources. Based on the most recent data, the state needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at roughly two to three times its current rate in order to meet the state’s existing climate goals, which actually need to be more ambitious in order to avoid the worst climate impacts.

We are one year closer to the 2030 deadline scientists have given us to make the necessary investments and policy changes to avert major climate catastrophe, and we’ve got too little to show for it.

That’s why 2022 must be a year of climate action in California, friend, and our biggest opportunity is the state budget.

With record surpluses, we have the chance to put a big dent in solving the climate crisis with large scale investments in clean energy, transportation, and resilience. We are calling for at least 5% of the budget – $75 billion over five years – to be dedicated to fighting climate change. This would be a real downpayment making people’s lives better now while protecting our future.

The nation and world are looking at California for leadership. Our State Legislature and Governor have their work cut out for them, and the clock is ticking.

We’re past the point of incremental measures — anything short of bold, expansive action on climate is insufficient. Take action today to support our efforts to hold California legislators accountable for inaction on climate.
