Dear John,

My congressional district, NY-10, is one of the most unequal districts in the nation in terms of wealth distribution. We are living in a new gilded age, where it is not just a matter of rich and poor—but EXTREME rich, and EXTREME poor.

In New York City, we see the impact of these extremes in our housing crisis.

I’ve worked for years on the housing crisis for the state of New York, but we need a fighter in Washington. Donate now to help me get there. ([link removed])

I witnessed some of the ramifications of this crisis while working for New York State, as I fought hard to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for NYCHA when Congress failed to act. As I knock on doors around the district, everyone brings up housing, even people with means, because they see their communities suffering and want their representatives to take action.

But nothing has hit me harder than than this week’s story from The New York Times about the 114,000 Students in NYC that are homeless, and the 'day in the life' of two of these students: Darnell and Sandivel.^1 It was heartbreaking. And this story is not unique to New York — children all across the United States are victims of our country’s housing crisis.

As a mother, I can't fathom how our leadership has let us get to this point. The trauma these children face now will impact them for years to come.

It is stories like this that reinforce my belief: It is time for new leadership. I believe housing is a human right, and our elected officials have failed to act with the urgency and moral courage required to address this systemic emergency. Once elected to Congress, I promise to wake up every day and prioritize the lives of these children and the generations to come.
