Sonic Blasting Permit Blocked, Company Will Appeal Gov. Cooper rejected a company's request to explore for oil and gas off our coast with sonic blasting, which is dangerous for marine life and fisheries. Duke Sued for Coal Ash Damages North Carolina, Virginia, and several federal agencies have sued Duke Energy for damages from its massive 2014 Dan River coal ash spill. Return of the Fox Guarding the Henhouse Phil Berger picked Pat McCrory's pro-polluter former DEQ secretary Donald Van der Vaart to serve on the Environmental Management Commission.
