Facing International Challenges: Women as Key Actors


On Friday 11, 2022,  an assembled panel of international women politicians, mediators, negotiators, and experts spoke at an event on “Facing International Challenges: Women as Key Actors” as part of the Expo 2021-2022 in Dubai. Organized by WIIS Italy and Aspen Institute Italia, in collaboration with the Italian Expo Pavilion, discussions at the conference focused on how to mainstream gender as part of a paradigm shift in the fields of foreign relations, international cooperation, and humanitarian assistance. The event served as a platform for discussion and reflection on how women’s agency shapes successful outcomes in each field.


WPS and Organizational Culture: Creating Lasting Change


On April 7-8 2022, the U.S. Naval War College will be hosting their 2022 Women, Peace, and Security Symposium, “WPS and Organizational Culture: Creating Lasting Change.” This symposium aims to facilitate the integration of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) throughout the Department of Defense by considering the role of organizational culture in effecting sustainable institutional change. The virtual component of this symposium is open to the public.

Gender and Climate Security: Weaponizing Water Scarcity


In late January 2022, following a series of Houthi rebel strikes on its territory, the United Arab Emirates targeted several civilian infrastructure sites in Yemen, including a water facility. This attack is part of a broader historical trend of weaponizing water in war. This blog argues that as both man-made and climate-driven factors accelerate water insecurity in much of the world, the disproportionate impacts of water scarcity on women and girls must be pushed further into the spotlight.

The Peace Corner Podcast: Revolutionary Aspects of Feminist Foreign Policy & Women, Peace & Security in Mexico


In 2021, WIIS Fellow, Ana Velasco Ugalde, and 2021 WIIS Next Generation Scholar, Daniela Philipson García, published a policy brief assessing Mexico's first National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security. They recently recorded an interview with the Peace Corner Podcast where they discuss the implications and contradiction of these first attempts by Mexico to implement the WPS Agenda, in a country where more than ten women are killed every day and where violence against journalists, LGBTQ+, afro descendants, and other marginalized identities is prevalent.

Women and Leadership: A Historic International Women's Day


In the latest episode of the Women and Leadership podcast from WIIS Brussels, host Ilana Bet-El welcomes Rose Gottemoeller, former NATO Deputy Secretary-General, and Steven C. Házy, Lecturer at Stanford University Center for International Security and Cooperation, for a conversation on the situation in Ukraine. In this episode, they examine the challenges posed to the international rule of law and the European security architecture and reflect on a basic question: can security arrangements be established in isolation from ideological principles?

Call for Papers: Digital Workshop on Localizing the Women Peace & Security Agenda Across Multiple Governance Challenges


The Global Transformations and Governance Challenges Programme at Leiden University will be hosting a digital workshop on January 26-27, 2023. This workshop will bring together scholars working on the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Participants will be required to present a conference paper related to the topic of ‘Localizing the WPS Agenda’.

Call for Applications: Sylke Tempel Essay Prize


In 2022, Women In International Security Germany (WIIS.de) and the journal Internationale Politik (IP) are hosting the fourth annual Sylke Tempel Essay Prize. The prize commemorates journalist, publicist, and mentor Sylke Tempel (1963 - 2017), chair of WIIS.de and editor-in chief of IP, Germany's leading foreign policy journal. This year’s theme is: "Digitization and networking are increasingly determining international thinking and action.” The competition is open to women 35 and younger. Applications are due June 30, 2022 and can be submitted in German or English. The winner will be awarded €1,500 in prize money, and their essay will be published in the June 2022 issue of IP.

Trade-Based Money Laundering (TBML) and Illicit Financial Flows: AML/CFT Controls, Countermeasures, Operations, and Practical Steps


The Anti-Illicit Trade Institute (AITI) at George Mason University's Terrorism, Transnational Crime, and Corruption Center (TraCCC) is excited to host an executive training on Countering Trade-Based Money Laundering (TBML), and Illicit Financial Flows from April 5th to May 5th, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 - 5 PM EST. There will be a range of expert instructors and guest lecturers from private business, government, and the non-profit sectors. The focus of this course will be on practical steps to combat TBML and with an emphasis on student engagement and discussion. WIIS members are eligible for a $50 discount on tuition. National Security Management Course at Syracuse University


The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University is pleased to open enrollment for its Spring 2022 course in National Security Management (NSM) to members of WIIS. NSM is an executive education course for senior executives of military, government, and industry organizations who need to perform confidently in roles for which a sophisticated understanding of national security affairs is critical. The syllabus of the course involves a mix of keynote addresses, case-studies, lectures, and practical exercises addressing key issues in national security—global trends, grand strategy, programs and budgets, institutions, technology, regional studies, et al.
