Are you as tired as we are of watching Governor Brian Kemp and defeated former Senator David Perdue try to out-conservative each other in the Republican gubernatorial primary? It’s exhausting – with Perdue fully embracing Trumpism and Kemp pulling out all the stops to show how scarily conservative he is.
Recently, this race-to-the-bottom primary has taken an even more frustrating turn, as Kemp and Perdue are now fighting over a planned electric vehicle manufacturing site just a little east of our district. Electric truck maker Rivian is planning to build a new plant in our state, and both Republican candidates are playing politics with the proposal.
It all started with Kemp keeping the public in the dark about the development and announcing the new plant only when it would benefit him politically. Kemp has ignored the concerns of the local communities surrounding the site and marched ahead to score as many political points as possible at the opportune time for his campaign.
Then Perdue stepped in and opposed the plant outright. Since when does a former Fortune 500 CEO like Perdue try to shut down a manufacturing plant? Since Donald Trump told him to run for Governor. Perdue has followed Trump so far down the MAGA rabbit hole, that he’s abandoned any business sense he may once have had.
John, just so we’re clear, here’s Hank’s two cents:
-
Americans are going to be driving more and more electric vehicles. That’s a good thing.
-
We should make those vehicles right here in Georgia.
-
Leaders need to engage the public in these discussions from the outset and work out solutions with local communities.
In short, the next governor of Georgia needs to act like an adult. And there’s only one candidate who fits that description – Stacey Abrams. When she becomes governor, she’ll need bold, progressive leaders like Hank to help her fully pull Georgia out of the GOP’s grip.
