Court Should Reverse the Dismissal of a Minor’s Lawsuit Against Omegle

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), the International Association of Human Trafficking Investigators, United Abolitionists, Paving the Way Foundation, Justice Restoration Center, and The Haba Law Firm filed a joint Amicus Brief supporting a young girl who was exploited at the age of 11 on the popular internet platform Omegle.

The brief supports the girl and her family’s appeal in M.H. v. Omegle.com LLC, where they are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to reverse the U.S. District Court’s dismissal of the case.

Survivors of abuse and exploitation—even via internet and social media platforms—deserve justice under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act.

"New" Yik Yak, Same Old Issues

Yik Yak, the anonymous social media app which was shut down in 2017 on account of rampant harassment and abuse, returned in August 2021. It seems that with the return of Yik Yak come the same harms we saw with the old version of the app.

Following the Yik Yak app's relaunch, reports of abuse started flooding back in—including reports of sexual harassment, objectification, threats, cyberbullying, stalking, and more.

How Etsy is Selling Sexual Exploitation

While millions worldwide flock to Etsy for the chance to buy handcrafted goods and support small business owners, there is a dark side to Etsy and the kinds of products it offers.

Etsy sells an array of products that normalize sexual exploitation and abuse—including sex dolls and misogynistic apparel which promote objectifying and degrading views toward women. Some of the sex dolls sold resemble minors, thereby normalizing child sexual abuse and encouraging pedophilia. Pornography can also be found on Etsy, including “deepfake” pornography where a person’s face is edited onto a nude body without their consent.
