Dear John,

It's difficult to find the words to describe how bizarre — and frightening — the Virginia "Ginni" Thomas text messages revealed by the January 6 committee are.

You simply have to read them for yourself:

• Nov. 5, 2020: "Biden crime family & ballot fraud co-conspirators … are being arrested & detained for ballot fraud right now & over coming days, & will be living in barges off GITMO to face military tribunals for sedition."
• Nov. 6: "Do not concede. It takes time for the army who is gathering for his back."
• Nov. 10: "Help This Great President stand firm" … "[this is] the greatest Heist of our History."
• Nov. 14: "This war is psychological. PSYOP."
• Nov. 24: "I can't see Americans swallowing the obvious fraud... the whole coup and now this... we just cave to people wanting Biden to be anointed?"
• Nov. 19: "Release the Kraken and save us from the left taking America down."
• Jan. 10, 2021: "We are living through what feels like the end of America. Most of us are disgusted with the VP and are in listening mode to see where to fight with our teams."

This is the wife of a sitting U.S. Supreme Court justice and a participant in the events of January 6 urging the White House chief of staff to steal an election. And these are just a sampling of the messages.

John, to ensure that Trump's attempted coup is fully investigated and those responsible are held accountable, Justice Clarence Thomas MUST recuse himself from all cases involving January 6. And if he won't, Chief Justice John Roberts must take action and pressure him to do so.

Republicans want to sweep all of this under the rug and pretend that Ginni Thomas is just some random political spouse firing off nutty text messages.

But that's a lie.

Ginni Thomas is a major player in the far-right movement. She helped lead a group that actively pressed lawmakers to promote alternate slates of electors. She attended the January 6 rally in Washington, D.C. And she is the longtime partner and a close adviser to Clarence Thomas.

Is it any wonder Justice Thomas was the only dissenter in the Supreme Court's ruling that Donald Trump must surrender official documents to the committee investigating January 6?

Obviously, Ginni Thomas has a right to free speech, and she's entitled to her opinions. But conspiring to overthrow a lawful election is a crime.

Legal and ethics experts say this is not a close call. However, Justice Thomas has already failed to withdraw from one case concerning January 6, so Inequality Media Civic Action has devised a multi-pronged strategy to help demand his recusal in future cases and draw attention to the court's profound crisis of legitimacy.

First, we're calling on Chief Justice John Roberts to press Thomas to recuse himself. At the same time, we're using our vast reach on social media — with videos, TikToks, and the like — to make sure this ticking time bomb of a constitutional crisis doesn't recede from public consciousness. And finally, we'll work with allies in Congress to ensure the Supreme Court finally adopts a code of ethics requiring justices to recuse themselves in cases like this.
