Your weekly Indivisible Newsletter Indivisibles,
We are looking at a winning week:
- Last week, President Biden issued a directive to roll back Title 42 restrictions on asylum seekers, which will go into effect on May 23 (read more on that below).
- Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court nomination will head to the Senate towards the end of this week, and she looks to have a clear path to confirmation!
We have cause to celebrate and room to keep pushing -- the best possible combination for Indivisibles.
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your 4 weekly to-dos
- Click here to contact your representatives about the climate crisis. There has been an upswing of reporting on President Biden possibly using the Defense Protection Act to massively ramp up our ability to manufacture clean energy technology, transition to renewables, and create millions of jobs. We need to keep the heat on to get this done, apply it broadly, and then get the President to declare a national emergency, unlocking the full power of the executive to address climate change.
- Click here to urge President Biden to take immediate action on student debt. We eagerly await an announcement from the Biden administration on student loans and hope that it includes an extension of the payments pause and plans to cancel at least $50,000 of debt all together. This would strengthen our economy and be a big step towards addressing the massive racial wealth gap we have in this country.
- Sign up for Indivisible’s National Rural Caucus. Whether you've been organizing in your rural community for decades or are just getting involved, our rural program provides space to connect with one another, engage in rural electoral and advocacy work, and celebrate rural resistance and power building. Sign up to receive a monthly rural newsletter geared specifically towards organizing for change in rural communities.
- Click here to demand swift confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson if you have a Republican senator. Click here to urge your senator to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court if they are a Democrat. This is likely the final week to make an impact and ensure her confirmation. Judge Jackson has already been confirmed three times in the past on a bipartisan basis for her previous roles. She is clearly qualified. Call on your senators to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson without delay. And, if you need help, click here to access a resource for pushing back on right-wing lies about the Supreme Court nomination.
P.S. We rely on your support to keep call pages up and running, fund ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year. If you’re able, click here to donate to help fund our work.
Let's Go Joe
We did it! On Friday April 1, President Biden ordered the phase-out of Title 42, which will take effect on May 23. Through activists’ dedication (and the leadership of partner organizations), we have been able to help pressure the Biden administration to roll back this cruel policy left over from a Trump administration more concerned with fear mongering and racism than public health. Title 42 closed our borders to asylum seekers fleeing persecution under the guise of public health during a pandemic while, in practice, allowing Trump to block Brown and Black immigrants from entering this country by legal means.
Recently, the Biden administration exempted Ukrainians fleeing the war from the impact of Title 42, and we are glad to see that compassion extended to all Brown and Black peoples who have been disproportionately harmed by this policy. Let’s celebrate this win -- click here to tweet your thanks at the White House and add a little encouragement to implement this change immediately so that no person is sent back to imminent danger under the fictitious guise of public health.
Ukraine
💔🇺🇦💔
The news out of Ukraine, and especially Bucha, has been absolutely horrifying. Russia’s apparent war crimes once again show the lengths Putin will go to attack democracy around the world. Despite what warmongers say, escalating the violence through a no-fly zone, US troops, or hyped-up military budgets is not the solution. Diplomacy and negotiations are the only way this conflict ends. (Which we joined over a dozen other groups in saying last week.)
One action you can take is to help disrupt the rampant disinformation about the conflict. Our Truth Brigade’s Big Truths webinar on April 13 shines a spotlight on how corporations and right-wingers are using disinformation to shift the blame for inflation fueled by the war in Ukraine away from Putin and fossil fuel dependence. Register here for the Truth Brigade’s Webinar on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30 ET/3:30 PT.
