John,

Last week in a congressional hearing, I had
the chance to question experts about the practices of private insurance
companies. What I learned perfectly illustrated why we need a Medicare for
All healthcare system, and why it would save all of us money and lead to
better health outcomes.

Private insurance spends 17 times more on administrative costs than
Medicare. Whereas Medicare spends just about $1 out of every $100 they
receive on admin costs, insurance companies are spending billions on:

* TV ads
* Stock buybacks
* Marketing (think those giant sports stadiums named after insurance
companies)
* Executive compensation that reaches into the *tens of millions* per
person per year

Our healthcare system should prioritize patients, not profits. [ [link removed] ]If

One of the main concerns I hear from constituents is that a Medicare for
All system would mean they couldn’t choose their doctor. But the reality
is that you would have more choice under Medicare—99% of non-pediatric
doctors participate in Medicare.

Medicare for All would allow doctors to spend more time with patients and
less time with paperwork. Right now, just a quarter of a doctor’s workday
is spent with patients.

And with the billions we would save though a Medicare for All system, we
could finally invest in expanding Medicare to cover things like hearing
aids and eyeglasses.

Medicare for All saves everyone money and delivers better healthcare. For
years, politicians and Big Insurance companies have stood in the way of
reform, but I promise I’ll keep pushing for a system that truly serves
patients.
