Friends,
We are happy to announce a VICTORY in the fight for short-term rental regulation!
Starting in 2015, LAANE fought with your help to get the LA City Council to adopt a law regulating short term rentals. When this law finally passed in 2019, the two core elements that we won were:
- A requirement that hosts live in the units they rent, so housing units aren't taken off the market.
- A prohibition on short-term rentals in RSO units, the most valuable units in this affordable housing crisis.
Before the law even went into effect, two new laws were introduced to challenge it: a law to eliminate the primary residence requirement and to eliminate the ban on RSO units. We've fought these laws for two years, and now, WE'VE FINALLY WON!
Last fall, the city council shelved the ordinance eliminating the primary residence requirement. Earlier this month, Mitch O'Farrell, the RSO exemption's primary sponsor, threw in the towel. He sent a letter to the planning department, asking them to shelve that proposal.
