Health Policy Events

Join Health Affairs for free virtual events in April! This month, we will host conversations with Evan Lemire, Katie Keith, Tim Jost, Brian Powers, Stephanie Franklin, and more.

Journal Club: “Unequal Housing Conditions And Code Enforcement Contribute To Asthma Disparities in Boston, Massachusetts”

The centerpiece of the April Journal Club meeting is “Unequal Housing Conditions And Code Enforcement Contribute To Asthma Disparities In Boston, Massachusetts.”

The paper, appearing in the April 2022 issue of Health Affairs, analyzes how housing code enforcement systems in Boston address tenants’ reports of asthma triggers.

The authors find that race is the most important factor predicting the incidence of asthma triggers and municipal responses, and propose policy prescriptions for reducing these disparities.

Please join Evan Lemire, a computational scientist in environmental health at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, on April 12 for a detailed discussion of the paper’s data, methods, and conclusions. Health Affairs Senior Deputy Editor Sarah Dine will host.

Time: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Eastern)

Lunch and Learn: Food Insecurity and Other Health-Related Social Needs Among Older Adults

On April 26, Health Affairs will join with the Society of Health Policy Young Professionals to host a Lunch and Learn event on the topic, “Food Insecurity and Other Health-Related Social Needs Among Older Adults.”

The session will focus on a new study appearing in the April 2022 issue of Health Affairs, “Health-Related Social Needs Among Older Adults Enrolled In Medicare Advantage (MA).”

Authors Brian W. Powers and Stephanie M. Franklin, both of Humana, will present the findings of a large, national survey of older adults enrolled in MA, which found a high burden of health-related social needs, including financial strain, food insecurity, and poor housing quality, as well as significant disparities according to race, socioeconomic status, and sex.

They will be joined by Monica E. Peek of the University of Chicago, a frequent Health Affairs contributor, whose work – including the 2021 Forefront article, “As They Take On Food Insecurity, Community-Based Health Care Organizations Have Found Four Strategies That Work” -- explores many of the same issues.

Register today for this timely discussion of new data and policy prescriptions related to social determinants of health and equity. Health Affairs Deputy Editor Rob Lott will host.

The Society of Health Policy Young Professionals, founded on 2006, is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, non-partisan, volunteer-led organization designed to meet the diverse needs of DC-area young professionals interested in the health, health care, and health policy fields.
