CEP-KAS Event: The Taliban’s Takeover In Afghanistan – Effects On Global
Terrorism

(New York, N.Y. / Berlin) – Since the takeover of power by the Taliban in
Afghanistan in August 2021, experts and politicians have been discussing what
effect this event will have on global terrorism. Already during the first weeks
after the Taliban’s victory, a trend became visible: The Islamic State (IS)
continues to conduct severe terror attacks in the country, and on social media
platforms, a significant number of terrorist organizations around the world are
celebrating what they perceive as victory over the West.

To understand the direct impact of the Taliban’s takeover on international
terrorism and to be able to potentially adapt counterterrorism measures
accordingly, a more thorough analysis is needed.

Opening with the keynote speech by Rahmatullah Nabil, the Former Director
General of Afghanistan’s national intelligence and security service, this panel
discussion will try to explore this issue further. Through the input of the
renowned experts, Dr. Guido Steinberg, Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler, and Dr.
Gerhard Conrad, we will establish a picture of the current threat level for
Europe and discuss the existing and required counterterrorism measures.
Finally, Roderich Kiesewetter, Member of the German Bundestag, will shed a
light on the consequences this has for German politics and the country’s
intelligence and security services.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) are
happy to invite you to this joint event.
