It was a small price to pay in return for a place to live and documentation that would bring her to America, where she had always dreamed of living. But it didn’t take long before the demanding diplomat became threatening and violent.
When Nadine arrived, the diplomat told Nadine she was to care for her four children full time. The woman took Nadine’s passport, slapped and punched her repeatedly, and threatened to cut her if she did not do as she was told. She warned that complaining to the police would not help, since she was connected and powerful in the community.
Concerned both for herself and for the children living in that violent household, Nadine found the courage to escape to safety and call the Polaris-operated U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline. The Hotline Advocate who answered her call helped her to find a place to stay while she worked out a plan to rebuild and to heal.
