Dear Friend,

The Traditional Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary always is commemorated on the Friday of Passion Week, just before Palm Sunday. This was declared by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727. Our Lady of Sorrows is also honored on September 15, as well as the entire month of September.

Join me in three days of prayers and please submit your intentions to be included in Three Holy Masses, from April 6-8.

Let us focus on the extreme suffering of Mary who saw Jesus badly scourged and beaten, with open, bleeding wounds throughout the body, covered with blood, carrying a heavy cross. Then, she stood by the cross and could not help her Son, who was in agony, with His sacred hands and feet nailed to the cross, as he struggled to breathe until He gave up His spirit. Then she held the broken, bruised and lifeless body of Jesus in her arms. Mary was drowned in a sea of woe.  As Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a Doctor of the Church wrote: “Truly…He died in body through a love greater than anyone had known; she died in spirit through a love unlike any other since His.”

As we observe the suffering people of Ukraine, and even those in Russia who oppose the bombing and killings, as well as the kidnappings and tortures in Africa and the Middle East, our hearts break.  Some of us may be experiencing great hardships during lent – suffering, which we did not expect. An unexpected health crisis. Others may have financial burdens; the increase in food, shelter and gas, which can make it harder to pay the bills. Or, some may be suffering due to a family member or friend who has left the Church.

Please submit your intentions <[link removed]> today. May the Queen of Martyrs save us and our loved ones by her prayers.

O Mary, consumed with grief and filled with anguish, please comfort your afflicted children, who seek your help.

Yours in the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Thomas McKenna
