We have to stop Keystone XL.? ? ? ? Friend ? this is horrible news: State regulators in North Dakota are reporting that the crude oil spill from the Keystone pipeline has affected almost 10 times the amount of land as first reported.
The Keystone pipeline carries tar sands oil ? a particularly dirty mixture of clay, water, and heavy oil. When it spills into wetlands it sinks in, making it virtually impossible to clean up.
We need your help. The company that operates the pipeline, TC Energy Corp (formerly TransCanada), is attempting to brush this under the rug and expand the pipeline to new areas. The Trump administration recently gave the expansion ? called Keystone XL ? a green light.
There's still a short window to stop that from happening. Property owners along the planned construction route are preparing lawsuits to block new construction. We need to be throwing up every possible roadblock to the pipeline ? we're asking every LCV member to pitch in to make that possible.
One of our donors has agreed to put up a triple match so that every gift until the November 30 deadline will go three times as far.
That's why we're asking for an emergency contribution to stop the full completion of the Keystone XL pipeline. Can you help? Chip in with a donation today. Even $5 will make a difference ? [link removed]
We have to stop Keystone XL. It's not just the incredibly dangerous leaks that make this pipeline a disaster ? on a lifetime basis, a gallon of gasoline made from tar sands produces about 15% more carbon dioxide emissions than one made from conventional oil. We're already witnessing the rapid deterioration of our climate. Imagine releasing EVEN MORE carbon into our atmosphere!
But friend ? this isn't the only urgent environmental crisis we're up against right now. In the midst of the impeachment fight, the Trump administration is moving quickly to undo bedrock environmental protections. These are the campaigns we're working on as we speak:The EPA announced it will allow coal companies to leave toxic waste sitting in storage ponds, where it can leak into our groundwater. Chip in today to fight back ? [link removed] Trump just officially filed papers to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, a dangerous decision that will hurt our fight against climate change at home and abroad. Contribute now to make sure state and local governments stay in the agreement ? [link removed] 17 million acres of the Tongass National Forest are at risk of permanent destruction. Make a gift now to tell the Forest Service to protect these public lands ? [link removed] What happens next is up to LCV members like you, friend. We have a real shot at stopping Keystone XL. We CAN hold the EPA to its mission. We CAN hold ourselves to the promises of the Paris agreement, whether Trump likes it or not. But it will only happen if we continue our momentum on these critical campaigns.
We need your help to keep it up. The truth is, a campaign like this takes resources we just don't have right now. We're need you more than ever.
Thank you, as always, for sticking with us.
Sincerely,
