This weekend marks the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month of the year for Muslims. Throughout the year, Muslims are called to support people in need. But there’s an extra focus during Ramadan on giving charitable donations—known as Zakat—and providing acts of service for our communities.
So to start off Ramadan, I want to lift up an incredible organization in Detroit that could use our support.
Freedom House has provided 5,000 refugees and asylum seekers with safe refuge and a path to independence. Their clients come from every corner of the globe, all fleeing persecution and nearly all survivors of torture.
Freedom House is the only full-service asylum provider in Michigan—providing safe shelter for up to two years, along with food, clothing, legal aid, access to medical and mental healthcare, and support with finding employment and housing.

Your donation will help families stay safe, like these folks living at Freedom House:
Freedom House’s on-site legal team guides clients through asylum applications and interviews, work authorizations, family reunifications, and more.
Case managers coordinate medical and mental health care access, including providing transportation, selecting a care provider, scheduling appointments, and, when needed, accompanying clients to their appointments and arranging for interpreters.
It’s important to note that asylum seekers are not eligible for employment until six months to one year after they file their asylum claim.
So while at Freedom House, clients also work with a case manager who guides them through a continuum of pre-employment services, including English as a Second Language classes, resume design, job searching, and interview coaching.
