Dear People For Supporter, This will be a historic week for our nation as we move towards confirmation of the first-ever Black woman to join the Supreme Court. Right now everything is on track for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be confirmed late in the week – and it will be a moment of sheer joy. However, we still have a very long road to travel in order to bend the moral arc of our country and achieve a judicial system that protects the rights of everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected. We’re deeply concerned – we hope you are too – at the prospect of far-right extremists gaining a majority in the Senate this fall, and shutting down all the progress we’ve made in rebalancing the federal judiciary since President Biden took office last year. For more than 40 years, People For has been fighting right-wing extremism, and helping build a democratic society that upholds the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. But we can only do this work with the financial contributions from supporters like you, so today we ask you to chip in the most generous donation you can to renew your People For membership and help fuel our grassroots movement. >>
The signs of creeping authoritarianism and neofascism on the Far Right are plain for all to see these days, ranging from book banning, erasure of LGBTQ+ Americans, and voter suppression here at home ... to support for war criminal Vladimir Putin abroad. We know this isn’t the future most Americans want, but we’re looking ahead to the midterm elections this fall and watching the Far Right hide their true agenda with dishonest rhetoric – most vividly demonstrated in Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearing. Their racist and bigoted scare tactics are designed to fire up their base and divide Americans along racial, religious, and cultural lines – and unfortunately there’s a chance they will prove effective. We believe we can stop the Far Right from seizing control of Congress in this most critical election year. But it’s going to take a people-powered movement – and, to be honest, like many nonprofit and advocacy organizations this year, our fundraising levels are not where they need to be right now. We know how to run effective electoral programs that turn out lower-frequency voters and get results in the races that matter – but to fund this work properly, we need your grassroots financial support. On behalf of everyone here at People For, I thank you for your financial support AND for everything you do to defend our democracy. All the best to you, Ben Jealous, President
