 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • President Biden unveiled his budget proposal this week, a $56.7 billion budget request for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for fiscal year 2023, representing a 5.4% increase from the budget requested for 2022. The budget request calls for $15.3 billion for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and $8.1 billion million for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The president also requests funding for managing migration and processing at ports of entry at the U.S. southern border.

This fact sheet from the American Immigration Council explains how much these border enforcement initiatives have cost throughout the decades and what outcomes—if any—they produced.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Title 42 represents the greatest restriction on access to the asylum process since Congress passed the Refugee Act in 1980. It has been a failed border management policy that has caused chaos along the border, inflicted immeasurable harm to innocent people seeking our protection, and diminished our standing on the world stage. Putting an end to the unjustified use of this policy is a long overdue step toward rebuilding a humanitarian protection system at the border that is safe, humane, and orderly.”
