The short version: It’s because Republicans aren’t worried about consequences at the ballot box. Gerrymandering keeps their seats safe, which means they can take any position, no matter how extreme. So in Wisconsin:

“A group of Republicans in the state legislature, encouraged by Donald Trump, is pushing an illegal effort to undo the 2020 election. They want to rescind Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes for Joe Biden…
[Their] special counsel… suggested jailing mayors of some of the largest cities and employees of the state elections commission for opposing his investigation.”

And it’s not just Wisconsin: Republican legislators in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, which were gerrymandered in 2011, have also embraced efforts to delegitimize the 2020 election. It’s yet another insidious way that gerrymandering endangers our democracy!

The situation is far from hopeless, John. Our movement has made significant progress in the fight against gerrymandering by helping to elect five Democratic governors who vetoed manipulated maps, supporting independent redistricting commissions , and fighting gerrymanders in court .

But now, with the midterm elections coming up, we can do so much more. We have a chance to hold Republicans accountable for their map manipulation, help elect more officials who support fair maps , stop the GOP from stacking state supreme courts, AND, with our affiliates, keep up our litigation work!
