John,
When you think of a state like Kansas, you may think politics are controlled by politicians like the Koch Brothers - and whatever views they hold. But over the last couple years, sections of the state have been electing LGBTQ voices. And those victories are paying off when anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills pop up.
Last year, LGBTQ elected officials, advocates and allies were able to stop the anti-trans bills in the Kansas state legislature. And they're still working hard to make sure the latest round of anti-trans bills aren't signed into law.
In 2020, State Representative Stephanie Byers shattered two rainbow ceilings. She is the first out transgender person to serve in the Kansas legislature and the first out transgender Native American person to ever serve in the United States. When it comes to stopping anti-trans legislation, Representative Byers is able to draw on her lived experiences to highlight the hypocritical and harmful nature of the bills.
Learn about how Representative Byers and her guest, Tori Gleason, activated their community to stop anti-LGBTQ bills in Kansas:

As Tori points out, trans people must continue to be involved with politics because they have to. Without trans or LGBTQ voices in the halls of power, our lives are up for debate - and on the menu.
That's one of the many reasons we need more LGBTQ people to run for office. Right now, trans people are woefully underrepresented at all levels of government. But we have to keep fighting back - and we need you to step up and run. This National Out to Win Day, learn more about how you can launch your campaign at outtowin.org!
Thanks,
Elliot Imse
