John,
BREAKING: Amazon and Google were just caught red handed funding a shady astroturf operation to fake opposition to bipartisan antitrust legislation that would finally rein in Big Tech.1,2
We’re organizing an *actually grassroots* day of action on Monday with other human rights groups like the EFF and smaller tech companies like DuckDuckGo and Yelp to fight Big Tech’s lies and pass two key antitrust laws targeting Silicon Valley monopoly power.
But unlike Amazon and Google, we don’t have piles of corporate money to throw around on lobbying and public relation efforts. Our activism depends on small donations from people like you. Will you chip in to help us take on Big Tech?
DONATE TO STOP BIG TECH
We spend a lot of time fighting back against terrible and misguided Internet legislation like SOPA/PIPA and the EARN IT Act. But these bills are actually good!
The Open Apps Market Act (OAMA, H.R. 5017, S, 2710) would end Google and Apple’s chokehold on mobile applications, giving consumers more control over their own devices.3,4 The American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA, H.R. 3816, S. 2992) would, among other things, ban Big Tech from “self-dealing” or promoting its own products in anti-competitive ways, an activity that serves only to solidify their market power.5 People should have a basic right to choose what software they want to run on the devices that they own.
And the best part is that we have a real chance of getting these bills passed. They’re sponsored by both Democrats and Republicans, and have already passed out of committee in the Senate.
But Big Tech giants are fighting dirty. Beyond the astroturf operation that was just exposed, they’ve got Capitol Hill under siege. They’re blanketing DC with an army of lobbyists, getting disinformation published as op-eds, and spending tons of money on ads.
We will never outspend them, but we can outsmart them. We’ve organized some of the largest online protests in human history for things like net neutrality, and now we’re going to do it again for #AntitrustDay this Monday. But we need your help. Will you chip in?
Dozens of nonprofits, small business associations, and “the rest of the Internet” tech companies have already signed on to support our #AntitrustDay effort.
They’ll be harnessing their online reach to help drive calls and emails directly to key legislators who will determine whether these antitrust bills go to the floor for passage.
If you run a company, website, app, or popular social media account, the best thing you can do is sign up to help drive traffic to the campaign page at AntitrustDay.org
Everyone else, write to your lawmakers, and if you can, chip in to help cover the costs of organizing this!
Unlike the opposition, we don’t have giants like Amazon and Google bankrolling our efforts ;-)
For a better Internet with more choice for users,
