Dear John, Today marks the beginning of VoteRiders' 10th Anniversary Month of Action!
We’re building a Rapid Response Fund to help voters overcome even stricter voter ID laws in Texas, Georgia, and Florida. Since we’re already seeing their devastating impact, NOW is the time to act.
-
Texas: The VoteRiders team educated and assisted voters ahead of last month’s disastrous Texas Primary Election. We saw, firsthand, mass disenfranchisement due to the new voter ID law with huge increases in rejected vote-by-mail ballots. For instance, in Harris County (Houston) the rejection rate of mail-in ballots increased by a whopping 650%. In 2018 just 2% of mail in ballots were rejected versus 13% in 2022.
-
Georgia: As the May 24 Primary Election approaches, we are racing to ensure voters have the ID they need to confirm their identity for absentee voting. Georgia now requires voters to provide their driver's license or state ID number or an acceptable form of voter ID when applying for an absentee ballot. Similar rules (plus the option of adding the last four digits of their Social Security number) apply when returning their ballots. Georgia’s new requirements and the accompanying confusion could easily replicate the mess in Texas.
-
Florida: The August 23 Primary is the first major election since the enactment of a law that mirrors the new Texas requirements for mail-in ballot applications. We can see the storm coming. We need to prepare the hundreds of thousands of at-risk voters, who also must have an acceptable ID – just as in Texas and Georgia - to vote in person, to make sure they’re ready and confident.
