Hi, .
Today, we celebrate International Fact-Checking Day thanks to individuals like you who value and support the role of facts in everyday life.
As a global center for fact-checking, we’re proud to recognize the essential work of fact-checkers everywhere. That includes our colleagues right here at the nonprofit Poynter Institute who create innovative solutions for the international fact-checking community during this modern age of misinformation.
SUPPORT FACT-CHECKERS ([link removed])
We all rely on fact-checkers to make sense of the vast amount of conflicting information surrounding what matters most in life — our health, the environment and our freedom of thought and expression.
We depend on them to hold powerful people accountable and to defend the integrity of the democratic process.
And today, we honor and support those courageous journalists who risk jail or physical harm to go beyond restricted borders and into war zones to provide honest information that helps keep civilians informed and safe.
In the past year we’ve seen this kind of courage recognized around the world, including the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov. Ressa’s organization, Rappler, is a verified signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at Poynter. Of these two fact-check journalists, the Nobel committee honored “their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”
Access to quality journalism can be a deciding factor between right and wrong, life and death, or war and peace. But, fact-checkers and journalists can’t do it alone. People around the world can take small, practical steps to improve the quality of our shared information ecosystem.
I invite you to make a meaningful contribution to support Poynter’s three fact-checking enterprises today. Together, we can build a future based on facts.
