You may remember me, John,

I'm Madiha Raza, the IRC's senior communications officer for Yemen, Ukraine, and several other crisis areas. For the next 30 days or so, I will join millions of Muslims around the world in observing the holy month of Ramadan. I'm looking forward to taking this month to celebrate and honor my spirituality, take stock of my blessings and reflect.

It's never easy abstaining from food and water all day. But while I know I have a delicious iftar — or fast-breaking meal — to look forward to every night, that's too often not the case for the families we serve around the world.

The world has largely looked away from Afghanistan and Yemen, but for families displaced by these crises, the worst is far from over.

97% of Afghan families are at risk of falling into poverty this year, and 23 million people are facing extreme levels of hunger. After last summer's transition of power, a brutal winter made things even worse for displaced families. As is often the case in humanitarian crises, women and children are bearing the brunt of this burden.

This is a true emergency, John. Dozens of children under the age of five are dying of starvation every week in Afghanistan.
