As a supporter of ProPublica’s work, you might know that our mission is to publish investigative journalism with the aim to spur change. We’ve got a proud history of doing just that. Over the past decade, we’ve seen innocent people freed from prison, victims compensated, corrupt politicians resign and much more.

Sometimes, our journalism can help effect change at the highest levels of government. This week, President Joe Biden published a new budget proposal <[link removed]> that includes a minimum tax for a sliver of our country’s wealthiest individuals. Last year, when we began publishing our explosive series, “The Secret IRS Files,” we hoped that by exposing how our country’s richest individuals pay little to no income tax, a new conversation could begin, rooted in facts, about how our tax system works and whether everyone is paying their fair share. This latest proposal, while its future is uncertain, is a big step toward updating a tax system that has exacerbated inequality for generations.
