Dear
Friend
—
Today I joined leaders from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles
to announce the launch of a historic program to dramatically reduce
emissions at our ports. This first-of-its-kind plan put us on a strong
path toward a greener and more sustainable future by setting up a
clean truck fee that will help support the transition to zero-emission
trucks moving cargo.
The fee will be paid by cargo owners and it's expected to raise $90
million in just the first year. It's also a critical part of how we're
going to meet the ambitious goal of our Clean Air Action Plan and
complete our transition to emission-free trucks by 2035.
This is a huge step forward for communities that have long been
impacted by emissions from the port and along the 710 corridor, and —
combined with historic investments in terminal electrification and
on-dock rail — represents significant progress towards addressing
these challenges.
The fact that we have been able to go from talking about
lower-emission programs to zero-emission ones is a major
accomplishment, and we must continue investing in the infrastructure
and technology to continue this work.
Our twin ports are leading the nation when it comes to
sustainability, and this program represents the beginning of the
future.
Thank you and Go Long
Beach,
Mayor Robert Garcia
