Hi there, John – I wanted to make sure you saw this message we sent out earlier today.

Here’s the gist: Over the past few months, SCOTUS has been unpredictable when it comes to redistricting, so we need to ramp up our grassroots efforts to secure fair maps. Will you make a contribution now to support the NDRC’s work?

In some cases, the Supreme Court delivered huge blows to our movement by allowing elections to go forward on racially gerrymandered maps and throwing out maps that expanded Black representation. But in other cases, the court handed down victories by denying GOP requests to toss out fair maps! This inconsistency leaves us with two options:

OPTION ONE: We can cross our fingers, and hope that SCOTUS becomes more consistent in upholding fair maps and overturning gerrymandered ones. If we choose this option, we’ll essentially be at the mercy of the court.

OPTION TWO: We can take matters into our own hands, and double down on our fight against gerrymandering in every corner of the country. If we choose this option, we’ll be prepared to do whatever it takes to secure fair maps – no matter what the court does.

Our team at the NDRC is prepared to go with Option Two, but we’re counting on grassroots supporters like you to power our work. We hope you’re with us, John – will you choose Option Two by rushing a donation now?

Thank you!

– Tara

Subject: SCOTUS is giving us whiplash

For the past few months, the Supreme Court has been all over the place when it comes to rulings on redistricting.

Luckily, our movement for fair maps has never depended on the rulings of any one court, and we’re prepared to continue fighting for fair maps no matter what SCOTUS does. Will you pitch in now to help power the NDRC’s work?

Here’s what happened.

First, SCOTUS’s decision gave Alabama the green light to hold their 2022 elections on gerrymandered maps – overturning a lower court ruling that these maps unconstitutionally diminished Black representation:

“Supreme Court Restores Alabama Voting Map That a Court Said Hurt Black Voters
The New York Times

We were outraged – but then, the court surprised us and delivered a huge victory for our movement by striking down GOP attempts to toss out fair maps in Pennsylvania and North Carolina:

“Supreme Court denies GOP challenges to congressional maps in North Carolina and Pennsylvania”
– CNN

But before we even had a chance to celebrate, SCOTUS handed another victory to Republicans – this time, in a decision that tossed out legislative maps in Wisconsin that the court said offered too much Black representation (yes, really):

“[T]he Supreme Court issued an astonishing decision throwing out Wisconsin’s new legislative districts… The majority accused a Republican justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court of greenlighting a ‘racial gerrymander’ by creating one more majority-Black district
– Slate

To be completely honest, all this back-and-forth is starting to give us whiplash, and we have no clue what the Supreme Court will do next.

That’s why now, we need to be prepared for anything.

We’re counting on you, John. Will you make an urgent donation to help the NDRC continue fighting for fair districts, regardless of what the Supreme Court does?
