[1]Women's March
John,
Martin Luther King Jr. and many others have said, ‘budgets are moral
documents.’ The way a society spends its resources is a reflection of that
society’s values. We know for sure, that a feminist society is one that
supports safety and dignity for all communities, and a feminist economy is
one that supports our vision with the resources and policies to bring it
forth.
Over the summer of 2021 our Women2Women Circle started exploring and
learning about their local and county budgets so that we could begin
and/or support organizing to re-shape local budgets into Feminist Budgets.
Our Circle Coordinators have been talking with women’s marchers across the
country and asking them to envision what their tax dollars could and
should do. Over the last few months, they’ve done the research, shared
what they’ve learned with their communities, attended budget sessions,
built a survey to hear from stakeholders, and now we’re working together
to build collaborative campaigns that allow us to shift our local budgets
to align with our shared values.
From Asheville, North Carolina to Phoenix, Arizona, and many places in
between, our Circles have collected over 1,230 survey responses.
This is what the experience has been like in their own words:
“I don’t think I’ve ever talked to my neighbor for more than a few minutes
until I started this budget research project. We went from just neighbors
to partners telling everyone in the neighborhood!” - Atlanta, Georgia
“It feels good to be a part of an organization actually doing the work to
build the feminist economy instead of just talking about it. - Bridgeport,
Connecticut
“At first it was a little intimidating, talking to people about how our
current system works but then you listen and you realize either they don’t
know or their also unhappy with it. And when you ask them what they’d like
to see their money spent, you can see them become empowered.” - Little
Rock Arkansas
Now we want to hear from 10,000 women’s marchers across the country. We
deserve a budget that represents the voices of the many, not the few. You
deserve a say in how your tax dollars are spent.

obtained from this survey will be used to inform and shape our priorities
and demands. This project is one way that Women’s Marchers across race and
place can come together to contribute to, collaborate on, and achieve
racial, economic, and gender justice.
