The Biden administration just announced that it will end the Trump-era Title 42 expulsion order on May 23. This policy shut down access to asylum at the border for more than two years and put people’s lives in danger.
This announcement is a huge step forward, even if overdue, as it affirms that seeking asylum is a fundamental legal and human right.
Title 42 was a xenophobic and deadly policy weaponized by the previous administration to punish asylum seekers under the guise of public health. We commend the Biden administration for ending it and urge them to continue the path toward restoring full and fair access to asylum for everyone who comes to the U.S. seeking freedom and safety, including at ports of entry.
We will continue to work with the administration to build a just and humane 21st century immigration system. The public has a critical role in this work as well – your voices calling for an end to Title 42 expulsions made a difference. Now, we must continue the momentum.
ADD YOUR NAME to show your support for the Biden administration’s decision to end Title 42 expulsions and for future policies that will bring us closer to an immigration system that recognizes the dignity inherent in us all.
Thank you for all that you do to help us uplift immigrant communities.
