We are in an all hands on deck moment to try to get a State Budget that includes the All-Electric Building Act (which gets fossil fuels out of new buildings starting in 2024) and the Advanced Codes and Standards bill (which incorporates climate goals into our building and appliance efficiency standards). The Governor and Senate are ready to move on these crucial policies, but the Assembly is blocking climate action in the budget. The fossil fuel industry is out in full force pushing on our elected leaders to undermine these important bills. We need to turn up the pressure on the Assembly, and in particular, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. We have about 48 hours to turn this around.

Here’s how to help:

  1. Look up your State Assemblymember here.
  2. Click on your State Assemblymember to find their phone number.
  3. Give them a call. You can use the script below. Feel free to add in at the end why you are passionate about climate change:

“Hello, my name is ____ and I am calling from  ____, NY to express my deep concern that the New York State Assembly has not passed any meaningful climate legislation in the last two years. I am requesting that Assemblymember [insert Assemblymember’s name] please go directly to Speaker Heastie* and ask him to include the All Electric Building Act (A8431) and the Advanced Building and Appliance Standards Act (A8143) in the budget. We must update our building codes and prohibit fossil fuels in new buildings starting in 2024. The Governor and the Senate are ready to pass these policies in the budget and we need the Assembly to join them. The fossil fuel industry is doing everything they can to keep this out of the budget, but we cannot allow them to override the voices of thousands of New Yorkers across the state who are calling for urgent and appropriate climate action without delay. Again, I want Assemblymember [insert Assemblymember’s name] to call Speaker Heastie and ask him to include this in the budget right now. Thank you.”
