There’s a reason that all the major gun violence prevention organizations, across the country, are so excited about Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson¹. She’s arguably the most qualified nominee ever to be suggested for this high position. Her professional experience includes work as a public defender, work for the US Sentencing Commission, and so much more. She also will be the first Black woman ever to sit on the highest court in the country. All of her professional and personal experiences make her especially suited to address gun violence-related constitutional issues in a way that is deeply empathetic and grounded in the reality of our collective struggles. We need Senator Toomey on board. Frankly, this nomination should be supported unanimously. But if the NRA has its way, she might not ever be sworn into office². Despite her repeated statements during nomination hearings, communicating her support for the constitutional reading of the second amendment, the NRA has been promoting a completely false perception of her so they can push a candidate of their own. Extreme groups should not get to disrupt the entire function of government, and we shouldn’t enact their vision of gun laws, which would endanger us all. We’re working around the clock to enact gun safety laws here in Pennsylvania that would save lives. This work is grueling and slow, but we’re building relationships and political power in communities to make it happen. An extreme, NRA hand picked nominee would make this work impossible. We need to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, and it needs to be by a wide margin, to send a clear message for what the next generation of judicial precedent will be for our communities.
