John,

We’ll cut right to the chase—our end of quarter fundraising deadline is
tonight at midnight. [ [link removed] ]Can you pitch in so we have the resources to keep
Katie Porter in Congress?

Katie’s standing up to special interests and fighting to lower costs, but
she’s up for re-election in November and Republicans are already attacking
her. [ [link removed] ]Check out the email she sent earlier today explaining why hitting
our end of quarter goal is so important.

John,

As a mom, I’m quite familiar with people asking me ‘why do I have to do
this.’

So you may be wondering, why do you and your team keep asking me to donate
ahead of midnight tonight? In the interest of giving a better answer than
‘because I said so,’ let me break it down:

What is the ‘end of quarter’ deadline?

After March 31st, we are federally required to report how much our
campaign has raised over the past three months.

Who cares how much the campaign raises by then?

When we report an impressive number, it sends a signal to Republican PACs
who are deciding which races to invest in.

Why should I contribute to you instead of another candidate?

There are lots of great causes and campaigns out there. But here’s my
pitch: My race will be one of the few that determines the House majority.
There are a dwindling number of swing-districts left after redistricting,
but CA-47 is one of them. We have an equal number of registered Democrats
and Republicans, and GOP groups have already run ads attacking me.

My race will simply cost more than races in other parts of the country.
Here in the LA media market (the second most expensive in the country), it
costs millions to run TV ads. And because Orange County has very few local
news outlets, we have to use (expensive) paid means to reach voters.

Why are you asking me?

The majority of politicians are spending today calling corporate PACs and
lobbyists to ask for their $5,800 maximum contribution. But I’m proud that
my campaign is funded by real, working people. I’ve never taken a dime
from corporate PACs and don’t take money from lobbyists or executives at
Big Oil companies, Big Pharma, or Wall Street Banks. It makes hitting our
fundraising goals more difficult, but I believe we need to get corporate
money out of politics.
